Presentation: Pharmacologic Management of Sleep Disorders in the Older Adult
This presentation includes signs and symptoms of common sleep disorders (Obstructive Sleep Apnea/Narcolepsy/Idiopathic Hypersomnia/Circadian Rhythm Disorders, Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)/Periodic Limb Movement disorders (PLM), and insomnia) and non-pharmacologic management of sleep disorders. Pharmacologic management of Narcolepsy, Idiopathic Hypersomnia, RLS/PLMs, and insomnia will be covered, including inappropriate sleep medications for older adults based on the current Beers Criteria.
Guest Speaker: Maureen SmithANP-BC, GNP-BC, DNPis a nurse practitioner in the University of Illinois Heath Science Systems, Sleep Disorders Center in Chicago, IL. She has over 25 years of experience working in sleep disorders medicine, both in research operations and as a clinician. She has published in various academic journals on topics in sleep disorders, as well as presented at national and international conferences on obstructive sleep apnea. She also serves as a clinical preceptor for doctoral nurse practitioner students from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing and introduces them to sleep disorders management in the primary care setting.
Credits Offered:
This event offers 1.0 CE credit to attendees (including .42 pharmacology contact hours).
To receive credit participants must attend the complete presentation and pass a short post-test demonstrating knowledge of sleep disorders, side effects of sedative-hypnotics, and medications appropriate for older adults with a score of 80% or higher.
This Continuing Nursing Education activity was approved by the Ohio Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation (OBN-001-91), Activity # 22938.
